CES: OWC DEC adds storage, card slots, and more to 2016 MacBook Pro

OWC has been making and selling expansion products for Mac for a long time, so it’s not surprising that the company today announced a new expansion chassis for the 2016 MacBook Pro that adds a number of missing features to the laptop. The OWC DEC (price and total feature set to be determined) attaches to the bottom of the 2016 MacBook Pro, making the full package just as thick as a 2012 MacBook Pro. What the 2016 MacBook Pro loses in terms of thinness, it gains in functionality.

The OWC DEC contains up to 4TB of additional Flash/SSD storage, bringing the maximum available on the MacBook Pro to 6TB including factory capacity. The SD card slot that’s missing from the new MacBook Pro is integrated into the OWC DEC, as well as USB 3 Type A ports for standard USB devices, Gigabit Ethernet, and other features that will be announced at a future date.

As with all OWC products, the OWC DEC will be available for purchase at www.MacSales.com. It’s expected to be available in Spring 2017.
