Apple: we would never use secret tools to spy on users

Reuters’ Joseph Menn reported yesterday that Yahoo had reportedly created custom software that would scan all incoming emails in real-time, and flag any that contained certain pre-defined keywords. Yahoo hasn’t denied it, saying in a brief statement only that “Yahoo is a law-abiding company and complies with the laws of the United States.”

Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Twitter said they never have, and would never do, such a thing. Apple, which is known for its strident privacy stance, says it has never been asked to do anything like this. “We have never received a request of this type. If we were to receive one, we would oppose it in court,” a spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.
