Waze to bring location-specific AMBER alerts to your phone

Crowdsourced navigation and traffic app Waze today announced the addition of AMBER alerts to its service. Alerts will be sent to Waze users in the vicinity of an alert and will appear when a user’s car has been stationary for more than 10 seconds. Alerts can be dismissed by tapping on the alert map. They also disappear automatically when a vehicle again begins to move. To avoid notification overload, each alert will appear only once per week.

Waze has always been about sharing information for the common good. In this spirit we hope the addition of AMBER alerts to Waze will make a significant contribution to safety and awareness for children and parents across communities everywhere.
— Waze

The AMBER alert program is an urgent bulletin system designed to alert a community and get their assistance in locating missing and abducted children. The program requires the voluntary cooperation of law enforcement, broadcasters, transportation departments, and wireless carriers. The Waze Social GPS, Maps & Traffic app is available for free in the iOS App store.
