In September a California federal jury awarded San Diego-based Taction the largest-ever US patent infringement award after finding Apple violated its patented technology for haptic feedback in iPhones and Apple Watches.
Now the haptics technology company claims that the verdict only covers Apple sales from 2021 to late March and asked the court to impose damages for the six months of sales since then, reports Reuters. Taction also asked the judge to award prejudgment interest at California’s 7% statutory rate, which would add at least hundreds of millions of dollars to the $5.7 billion verdict.
Taction first filed its lawsuit in 2021. The dispute centers on Apple’s Taptic Engine, which provides the tapping and vibration sensations in iPhones and Apple Watches. Taction argued that Apple used its patented tactile transducer technology without permission under U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117.
Apple won a dismissal in 2023. However, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit revived the case in 2025.Apple has denied any wrongdoing and said it will appeal. It has also asked the court to overturn the verdict
