Apple made a ‘major mistake’ in taking iPhone Duo orders too soon

Apple knew that the iPhone Duo would face “severe supply constraints” due to manufacturing challenges, but still chose to begin taking pre-orders on October 19 instead of waiting until more inventory was available, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in his latest “Power On” newsletter.

“The company knew there would be severe supply constraints but went ahead with the launch anyway, apparently prioritizing a desire to get the device on the market early in its fiscal first quarter over satisfying demand,” he said. “That will disappoint many of the early adopters most eager to buy it.”

Apple originally planned to launch the iPhone Duo in the U.S. and China only before expanding the device to other countries later, according to Gurman. However, the tech instead chose to start pre-orders in more than 70 countries simultaneously. Gurman said this was a “major mistake.” And I think he’s right. This was simply poor planning and execution.

The iPhone Duo is available in star white and night sky with prices starting at US $1,999 or $83.29 per month for 24 months, in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities. However, current shipping times for late (as in past 5 pm Pacific on October 19) have shipped into January.
