Joel Postman, a retired corp comms exec in Aptos, through garage sale karma, has come into possession of an original 1993 – 1994 notebook from a senior engineer from the Apple Newton development team.
The notebook is now listed in Bonham’s History of Science, Technology and Computing auction. It offers a first-hand glimpse into the development of the Apple Newton MessagePad.
The notebook is from the development of the second generation of MessagePads, the MessagePad 110, codenamed “Lindy.”
In the notebook, Senior Engineering Tech of The Newton Group, John Avalos, notes the results of Design and Production Validations Tests (DVTs and PVTs), and evaluations of various facets of the devices functionality and design. There are several printed charts, graphs, and diagrams related to these tests, contact lists, and email correspondences between Avalos and other Apple employees relating to the project, including some key figures of Apple Newton project like Donna Auguste, Steve Capps, Patty Tulloch, and Martin Gannholm.
By the way, Postman was an early Apple ii/Mac developer and later served as Scott McNealy’s speechwriter at the height of the dotcom boom.
