Microsoft is now disabling Exchange Web Services (EWS) by default in Exchange Online, reports MacRumors.
This will cut off the protocol that Apple’s Mail and Calendar apps on Mac still rely on to sync Microsoft 365 work accounts. Microsoft says organizations that have chosen to keep EWS running aren’t affected for now. As for everyone else, the cutoff may not happen all at once.
In a recently updated post from June, Microsoft described the change as a “phased rollout,” so some Mac users could lose access sooner than others.
EWS is a cross-platform API that allows applications to access, read, and manage mailbox items like emails, calendars, and contacts in Microsoft Exchange and Exchange Online. It provides programmatic access to rules, folders, synchronization, and archiving without using an interactive user interface.
