Apple’s new foldable iPhone has been unveiled, and so has the hardware trade-off of its telephoto lens to allow for a dual display and bigger battery.
This problem is not specific to Apple. Every new device launch today is chasing a slimmer design and more sophisticated integration, and most hit the same wall where something needs to get cut in order to make room – and it’s usually whichever component looks the least essential, according to Moti Margalit, CEO of SonicEdge, a manufacturer of miniaturised components for next-gen devices
He argues that it’s ultimately the end user who decides which capability is essential, and the trade-offs manufacturers make can be avoided altogether if their components are redesigned first, not the chassis.
“With Apple’s foldable phone, some first lookers report that the innovation of the dual display comes with hazier photos and a more visible under-display camera,” Margalit says. “But if the battery, speakers, and hinge were optimized first, this could have changed first impressions completely.
