Apple has bought Sonera, a California company that makes non-invasive sensors that can measure neural signals from the brain, with health benefits ranging from muscle monitoring to active thought control of devices,” reports AppleInsider.
Sonera has developed portable, room-temperature magnetometers using acoustically-driven ferromagnetic resonance to detect weak magnetic signals from the brain and muscles. Unlike heavy diagnostic equipment requiring extreme cooling or shielded rooms, their chips aim to make non-invasive neural and neuromuscular monitoring practical for consumer wearables.
Sonera’s S1 chip was built for muscle sensing and wearable use, which could make the technology relevant to future Apple Watch health features, Vision Pro controls and other assistive devices. European Union acquisition records indicate Apple completed the deal in May 2026. Apple and Sonera have not publicly announced the acquisition.
