Apple has canceled plans for a foldable MacBook and a larger OLED MacBook Pro, according to Omdia.
The research group says the tech giant has ditched plans for a 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable Mac laptop. Rumors of such a device has been rumored for years. For example, in December 2024, The Wall Street Journal claimed Apple was preparing a series of foldable products including a 19-inch Mac laptop.
The article said the laptop will essentially be the largest-ever MacBook with a foldable 19-inch screen. In February 2022 analyst Ross Young said Apple is considering a 20-inch foldable MacBook.
Young said a foldable laptop could form a new product category. If it arrives, it could be a dual-use product: able to work as a notebook with a full-size on-screen keyboard when folded and as a monitor when unfolded and used with an external keyboard. The foldable could also allow for 4K resolutions or higher at the size Apple is investigating, Young added.
As wild as the idea sounds, Apple has filed for multiple patents that hint at foldable Macs, iPhones, and iPads. Included among them are patent filing 10,579,105 and patent filing number 20190163233.
Omedia says Apple plans to add a new 13.8-inch MacBook to its product line. it will be positioned between the MacBook Air (LCD) and MacBook Pro (OLED), and will fully adopt a new generation of OLED technology. The research group also says Apple has abandoned plans for14.4-inch to 16.1-inch MacBook OLED products. This means that the MacBook Pros will continue to come in sizes of 14.3 inches to 16.3 inches.
What’s more, the research group says Apple has changed d its plans for adopting OLED displays across its Mac laptop lineup. Seems the company’s existing LCD-based MacBook Pro models with mini-LED backlighting will remain available for longer than anticipated.
