John Ternus takes over from Tim Cook as Apple CEO tomorrow, and a dubious article claims the company has been carefully orchestrating executive retirements for years so shareholders won’t panic.
Even though he’s usually correct in his Apple predictions, I think Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is way off on this one. In his latest “Power On” newsletter, he predicts that Apple will soon be unrecognizable, but — as AppleInsider notes — of the 11 people on Apple’s leadership page, he only expects two more to leave.
The two said to be focusing on their 401k are retail head Deirdre O’Brien, who is only 60, and chief hardware officer Johny Srouji, 61. Even though major Apple execs are closing in on retirement age, there’s absolutely no evidence that there will be an immediate major exodus of Apple execs.
When some of the company’s talent hit retirement age, they may retire. Or maybe not. There’s no mandatory retirement age at Apple. And some folks, like Yours Truly, want to keep working even as we hit the 65 (and older) mark.
So, as much as I respect Gurman, I’m convinced he’s wrong on this one. As AppleInsider notes, “the pace of retirements and departures hasn’t really changed. What has, is the visibility.”
