“Cape Fear” has finally concluded on Apple TV. And let’s hope there’s not a second season.
The first season was a bloated mess. It was 10 episodes long. The book on which it, and two previous movies, are based is “The Executioners” by John D. MacDonald. It’s 224 pages long.
The 1962 movie was directed by J. Lee Thompson and starred Gregory Peck as attorney Sam Bowden and Robert Mitchum as the vengeful ex-con Max Cady. It ran 106 minutes.
The 1991 movie was directed y Martin Scorsese, this stylized psychological thriller is a remake starring Robert De Niro as Max Cady and Nick Nolte as Sam Bowden. It ran 128 minutes.
The version on Apple TV ran approximately 450 minutes (based on 45 minutes per episode; some where longer and some were shorter). It added many unnecessary plot lines and twists.
And, though the acting was good, the members of the Bowden family (played by Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson, Lily Collias, and Joe Anders) were unlikeable and, well, dumb as rocks. It was only one idiotic decision after another. Otherwise, the series would have lasted about three episodes.
Sadly, the ending of the TV series was obviously designed to make a second season possible. As good as Javier Bardem was as the psychotic Max Cady, if there’s more of this story to follow, I won’t be tuning in.
Here’s how Apple TV’s “Cape Fear” is described: Inspired by the 1991 remake directed by Scorsese and produced by Spielberg, a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson) when Max Cady (Javier Bardem), the notorious killer they are responsible for putting behind bars, is let out of prison — and he wants vengeance.
