I’m dubious, but Apple’s first foldable iPhone is facing production hurdles, according to a new report from DigiTimes (a subscription is required to read the article).
What’s weird is that the same article says that supply-chain updates still point to a September debut of the foldable, which is likely to be dubbed either the “iPhone Fold” or “iPhone Ultra.”
The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks we’ll see the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arrive in September. I think the iPhone Ultra will arrive a bit later, likely in October. And you can expect to pay a LOT for it.
The first price hikes Apple announced were for the Mac, iPad, Vision, Pro, and HomePod mini. However, the leakers known as “Fixed Digital Focus” and “Digital Chat Station — as noted by MacRumors — say the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro line-up and the foldable iPhone will see higher price tags than originally predicted.
The price hikes could be around 11% more than their iPhone 17 counterparts. Predictions for the foldable iPhone have been pegged at between $2,000 and $2,500. An 11% increase would push those prices to between $2,200 and $2,275.
Here’s a round-up of some of the rumors about the foldable iPhone:
° It will use a dual-layer, ultra-thin glass structure to reduce display crease visibility.
° Apple will offer the iPhone Fold/Ultra in three different storage capacities: 236GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
° It will feature an interior foldable display roughly the size of an iPad mini. There also will be an external screen that’s about the size of the display on a small iPhone.
° Apple is developing new iOS app layouts and revamping its core iPhone programs to add sidebars along the left edge of the screen, similar to many of its iPad apps.
° The iPhone Fold/Ultra will have: a 7.8-inch inner display; a crease depth controlled to under 0.15 mm; and a crease angle under 2.5 degrees.
