Apple to give its retail store workers newer iPhones to increase in-store use of Tap to Pay

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple will be giving more retail employees newer iPhone 16s to increase the in-store usage of Tap to Pay on iPhone.

In this week’s “Power On” newsletter Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will be giving more retail employees newer iPhone 16s to increase the in-store usage of Tap to Pay on iPhone.

“Tap to pay with iPhone” refers to either paying for items at a store using Apple Pay, or accepting payments directly on your phone as a merchant. It securely processes payments from physical contactless debit/credit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets without needing extra hardware like card readers.

“The tap-to-pay system in the iPhone 14 can sometimes be finicky and not support metal cards like American Express Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve,” Gurman says. “But Apple has found that the iPhone 16 does a better job and eliminates the need for store employees to carry around the specialized terminals.”
