With macOS Mojave, Apple added support for favicons in Safari tabs — and that support continues in macOS Tahoe.
Favicons are those little icons that let you quickly identify which of your open tabs is which. Let’s look at how to use them in macOS Tahoe.
Steps to Enable Favicons in Safari Tabs:
- Open Safari.
- Click Safari in the menu bar at the top left of your screen.
- Click Settings (or Preferences on slightly older macOS versions).
- Select the Tabs icon at the top of the Settings window.
- Check the box next to “Show website icons in tabs.”
Steps to Enable Favicons in the Favorites Bar:
If you want to see website icons for your pinned favorites or the Favorites Bar, you can declutter by hiding the text titles:
- Open Safari.
- Go to View > Show Favorites Bar in the menu bar.
- Control-click anywhere in the empty space between the websites on the Favorites Bar.
- Select “Show Icons Only” from the pop-up menu.
Troubleshooting
If your favicons still aren’t loading, try the following:
- Clear Safari Cache: Go to History > Clear History, select ‘All History’, and click Clear History.
- Check the Favicon Cache: If an individual site’s icon is corrupt, you can reset the cache in the Finder by going to Go > Go to Folder in the menu bar and entering ~/Library/Safari/Favicon Cache/ to delete it.
