Creating a music playlist on an Apple Watch is a two-step process: you build the playlist on your iPhone, then you sync it to your watch.
Make the Playlist on Your iPhone
You must create the playlist on your paired iPhone before it can be transferred to your Apple Watch.
- Manual Method: Open the Apple Music app on your iPhone, tap Library, tap the + Add button or New Playlist, and choose Create New Playlist. Give it a name and start adding your favorite tracks.
- AI Prompt Method: If you are running iOS 26 or later, you can use the Playlist Playground feature. In your Library, tap the + to create a new playlist and type a natural language prompt (e.g., “morning hip-hop,” “upbeat workout tracks”), and let Apple generate a 25-song playlist for you.
- Sync the Playlist to Your Apple Watch
Once your playlist is created, you need to sync it over to the device.
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap the My Watch tab at the bottom.
- Scroll down and tap Music.
- Tap Add Music (or the + Add Music… button).
- Select Playlists and tap the + (plus icon) next to the playlist you want to sync.
- Place your Apple Watch on its charger and keep your iPhone nearby. The playlist will sync automatically over Wi-Fi.
