Apple canned its long-in-the-works Apple Car project in February 2024, but the company still occasionally files for a patent regarding automotive technology. The latest is for “Energy Management of Electric Vehicle.”
About the patent filing
In the patent — which only mentions a vehicle occasionally — Apple says that many systems and devices use electrical energy. For example, a system can charge a battery using electrical energy. Lots of systems that use electrical energy just draw electrical energy whenever needed without knowing anything regarding the electrical energy source that generated the electrical energy.
Apple’s patent filing is for techniques for managing electrical energy usage. It involves energy usage in other devices beyond electric cars including computers, tablets, and smart phones.
Summary of the patent filing
Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent filing: “The techniques described herein relate to energy management. The techniques include receiving a request for an energy guidance signal associated with an electrical energy source for shifting energy consumption used to charge an electric vehicle during one or more time periods.
“The techniques include receiving one or more characteristics associated with the electrical energy source during the one or more time periods. The techniques include generating the energy guidance signal for the one or more time periods based at least in part on the one or more characteristics of the electrical energy source. The techniques include providing the energy guidance signal to an electric vehicle charging management application for shifting the energy consumption used to charge the electric vehicle during the one or more time periods.”
