macOS 27, iOS 27, and iPadOs 27 will let users choose the third-party AI service they prefer as the default for Apple Intelligence, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
He says will let users choose from a range of outside artificial intelligence services to power features across its software, “building on a strategy to turn its devices into a comprehensive AI platform.” Those services could integrate third-party models from, for example, Anthropic.
This is despite the fact that Apple has made a deal with Google to sue a Gemini-based model for Apple Intelligence and a more personalized version of Siri. Gurman says users will be able tochoose any AI provider that adds support for Apple’s new iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 “Extensions” feature.
“Extensions allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more,” he says, quoting a message shown in test versions of the software.
Gurman adds that iOS 27 will let users choose different voices for each AI model.”
“Another enhancement will let users choose different voices for Siri conversations powered by external models,” he says. “Queries handled by Apple’s own system could use one voice, while responses from third-party models — such as Anthropic’s Claude — could use another.”
macOS 27, iOS 27, and iPadOS 27 — along with watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 — will be previewed at next month’s Worldwide Developer Conference. Mostly likely, they’ll be available for end users in September or October.
