New MacBook Pro models with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips could arrive as soon as Monday, March 2, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. And we may see other Macs updated soon, as well.
Gurman says the release of the updated Mac laptops are tied to the release of macOS Tahoe 26.3. He also thinks that updated Mac Studio models “shouldn’t arrive too long after the spring Mac refresh,” with a new Mac mini and a lower-cost MacBook also in the works.
The low-cost laptop is expected to cost “well under $1,000” and be deigned to compete with affordable Windows machines and Chromebooks. Apple’s lowest priced Mac notebook right now is the MacBook Air, which starts at $999.
A new Studio Display should also arrive this spring, Gurman says. He, and most pundits, think it will add support for ProMotion, which is Apple’s name for the adaptive, high refresh rate, 120Hz display first available on the iPad Pro.
While a standard refresh rate will update a display 60 times a second (60Hz), the ProMotion’s adaptive 120Hz screen works at twice this speed. This results in smoother scrolling, improved responsiveness and better gaming performance.
However, a MacRumors “tipster” says a 90Hz refresh rate would make sense due to bandwidth considerations. From MacRumors: Thunderbolt 5 can support 5K resolution at 120Hz without any compression, but they think Apple likely wants to ensure there will be plenty of remaining bandwidth for connecting other devices and peripherals to the new Studio Display.
Gurman also thinks that Apple will roll out new iPad and iPad Air model sin the near future. The former will purportedly sport an A18 chip, while the latter will pack an M4 processor. Neither upgrade is expected to feature any major design changes.
