Apple is rumored to be releasing a low-cost Mac laptop in the spring. And there may be two versions, not one.
The budget (for lack of a better word) laptop will cost “well under $1,000” and it will compete with affordable Windows machines and Chromebooks, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said. He says it will be Apple’s first “low cost” laptop. Apple’s lowest priced Mac notebook right now is the MacBook Air, which starts at $999.
A June 30 X post by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple plans to release a MacBook powered by an A18 Pro processor. Kuo claimed such a laptop will enter mass production ini the fourth quarter of 2025 or early 2026. He said the Mac laptop will sport a 13-inch display with potential casing colors include silver, blue, pink, and yellow.
“Apple aims to return total MacBook shipments to the COVID-19 peak of around 25 million units in 2026 (vs. an estimated 20 million units in 2025),” Kuo said. “The more-affordable MacBook is projected to account for 5–7 million units for 2026.”
A new report from AppleInsider says the low-cost MacBook may include a lower-powered model, with Apple said to be testing the A15 chip alongside the A18 Pro.
From the article: Apple’s testing of two chips multiple generations apart could mean it is considering releasing two versions of the MacBook with different levels of performance. Though it may also simply be for testing purposes, to see whether the A15 is acceptable enough for use in a notebook.
In either case, the use of the chips should help lower the cost of the MacBook to compete against more budget-friendly options on the notebook market.
