According to The Information, Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 models will undergo significant design changes next year. To wit:

° The rumored “iPhone 17 Air” won’t have a physical SIM, which could impact sales in China.

° They’ll all switch to aluminum frames from stainless steel and titanium.

° The back of the Pro and Pro Max models will feature a new part-aluminum, part-glass design.

° The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are getting larger “rectangular” camera bumps made of aluminum.

° Wireless charging may be impacted by the shift away from an all-glass back.

The next generation of iPhones will almost certainly be announced in September or October. Following is a round-up of other rumors:

° iPhone 17 Pro models may have a new copper-like orange color option.

° A sky blue finish may be reserved for the iPhone 17 Air and not be offered on the iPhone 17 Pro as anticipated.

° The iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will be available in a total of nine color options.

° The A19 Pro chip will have a 6-core GPU in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, but only a 5-core GPU in the iPhone 17 Air.

° Three out of four iPhone 17 models will feature more RAM than the equivalent iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 17 Air, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will each be equipped with 12GB of RAM, while the base model iPhone 17 will have 8GB of RAM.

° iPhone 17 models will feature a redesigned Dynamic Island user interface.

° The iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature the biggest ever battery in an iPhone.

° Apple may reposition the Apple logo on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro for the first time in six years.

° The regular iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Air WON’T  feature ProMotion displays. Although other rumors claim Apple will bring the tech to the base iPhone 17 model, as well as the new iPhone 17 Air that replaces the Plus model in the lineup.

° The iPhone Air will be the only iPhone model that uses Apple’s own “C1” modem. The other models will incorporate Qualcomm modems.

° The iPhone 17 Air will have a resolution of 2,736 x 1,260.

° The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will sport a vapor chamber cooling system.

° Apple may have canceled the super scratch resistant anti-reflective display coating that it planned to use for the iPhone 17 Pro models.

° The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max may be offered in a Sky Blue hue.

° The base iPhone 17 may be offered in purple or green hues.

° The iPhone 17 Pro will feature a new telephoto lens with a 48MP sensor.

° iPhone 17 Pro models will be capable of shooting 8K video. That’s up from the current maximum 4K capture resolution on the iPhone 16 series.

° The iPhone 17 line-up may include an “iPhone 17 Pro Ultra” model.

° All four iPhone 17 models will feature an upgraded 24-megapixel front-facing camera.

° Apple will increase the thickness of the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max compared to the current iPhone 16 Pro Max.

° Apple has tested a wireless reverse charging feature for its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models that would make the iPhone capable of delivering power to other Apple devices,

° The iPhone 17 series will use Samsung’s high performance “M14” OLED display panel.

° The iPhone 17 lineup will feature a vapor chamber heatsink to improve thermal performance.

° iPhone 17 Pro models will feature a smaller main camera sensor than the one used in the Fusion camera currently found in iPhone 16 Pro models.

° The iPhone 17 Pro Max year will feature a smaller Dynamic Island.

° Apple’s standard iPhone 17 will feature a display with a higher refresh rate, potentially bringing “ProMotion” technology to the base model in Apple’s flagship iPhone lineup for the first time.

° The smartphones could sport a redesigned camera bar running along the width of the devices instead of the smaller bump on this year’s iPhone 16 series,

° The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a titanium chassis just like the current Pro models (although other rumors claim Apple will adopt aluminum across its 2025 lineup).

° The tetraprism camera system that enables 5x optical zoom will be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

° The iPhone Air (or it may be dubbed the “iPhone Slim”) could be the thinnest iPhone ever: 6.25mm thick.

° The entry model iPhone 17, plus the 17 Air will receive some of the best “Pro” features: an LTPO display with 120Hz refresh rate.

° The processors for 2025 iPhone 17 models will be made by Apple partner’s TSMC’s N3P process/3-nanometer technology.

° Apple will discontinue the Plus model.

Kuo says that only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature the following specifications:

° 12GB DRAM (while the ultra-thin iPhone, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and SE4 will all have 8GB). Enhanced on-device AI capabilities will likely be a major selling point for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

° An upgraded cooling system combining vapor chamber (VC) technology and graphite sheets. Other 2025 new iPhone models will continue to use graphite sheets alone for thermal management.

Other details about the overall specifications of the iPhone 17 lineup have been shared by the leaker known as “Ice Universe.”
