The iPhone 16e contained Apple’s first custom cellular modem dubbed “C1,” and it will appear in the upcoming “iPhone 17 Air,” according to 9to5Mac.
However, it will be the only model using the modem, the article adds. 9to5Mac says the rest of the iPhone 17 product line will stick with Qualcomm’s 5G modems.
“We don’t know for sure why Apple is slowly integrating C1 into its devices,” the article says. “It could be due to existing purchase commitments with Qualcomm, hedging against any possible connectivity issues that C1 presents, or just risk management overall.”
Regarding the C1 modem, it’s just the beginning of Apple’s modem plans. “Expanding the benefits of Apple silicon, C1 is the first modem designed by Apple and the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone, delivering fast and reliable 5G cellular connectivity,” Apple says. “Apple silicon — including C1 — the all-new internal design, and the advanced power management of iOS 18 all contribute to extraordinary battery life.”
Look for the iPhone 17 line-up to arrive in September or October.
