John Giannandrea will no longer oversee Apple’s secret robotics division, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
Last month it was announced that Mike Rockwell, Apple’s head of the Technology Development Group who spearheaded the developer of the Apple Vision Pro, is taking over the Siri team from Giannandrea following the “personalized Siri” fiasco/missing Apple Intelligence fiasco.
Now Gurman reports that the robotics development will be overseen by Apple senior vice president John Ternus instead of Giannandrea. However, Giannandrea continues to head up Apple’s AI and machine learning efforts.
Giannandrea has a long history at Apple. In 2018 the tech giant announced that he had been named to the company’s executive team as senior vice president of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Strategy. In the announcement of his hiring, Apple had this to say: Giannandrea oversees the strategy for AI and Machine Learning across all Apple products and services, as well as the development of Core ML and Siri technologies. His team’s focus on advancing and tightly integrating machine learning into Apple products is delivering more personal, intelligent and natural interactions for customers while protecting user privacy.
Prior to Apple, Giannandrea spent eight years at Google where he led the Machine Intelligence, Research and Search teams. Before this he co-founded two technology companies, Tellme Networks and Metaweb Technologies. Earlier in his career Giannandrea was a senior engineer at General Magic.
He graduated from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where he earned a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Computer Science, and was awarded a Doctorate Honoris Causa. He’s on the board of trustees at the SETI Institute.
