The funding for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposure (CVE) security program used by Apple and other tech firms has been removed by the Trump administration. The program was run by the defense and research-focused nonprofit MITRE Corporation.
“By cutting what amounts to penny costs, the Trump administration will effectively (at least temporarily) cripple the global cybersecurity system — CVE. What is CVE? It is a global system for identifying and tracking vulnerabilities that has served as a common language for companies, governments, and researchers worldwide since 1999,” the MITRE Corporation says in an X post. “The consequence will be a breakdown in coordination between vendors, analysts, and defense systems — no one will be certain they are referring to the same vulnerability. Total chaos, and a sudden weakening of cybersecurity across the board.”
However, CVE board members have responded by announcing a new non-profit known as the CVE Foundation, intended to continue the work, according to 9to5Mac.
