Survey: 88% of teens currently own an iPhone with 25% expecting to upgrade to an iPhone 17

Piper Sandler Companies, an investment bank, has completed its 49th semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens survey in partnership with DECA. And it’s good news for the iPhone and Apple Music.

The survey found that 88% of teens currently own an iPhone with 25% expecting to upgrade to an iPhone 17 this upcoming fall/winter. According to the survey, 34% of teens say they use Apple Music, while Spotify is number one with 45%.

The news is less good when it comes to Apple TV+ and the Apple Vision Pro and Apple TV+. Apple TV+ is viewed by just 1% of teenagers.

The survey shows that about 31% of teenagers own a virtual reality (VR)  headset of some form. However, 25% of teens use Oculus while 1% use Apple’s spatial computer, and 1% have access to headsets from both brands.

The Piper Sandler Taking Stock With Teens survey is a semi-annual research project that gathers input from 6,455 teens with an average age of 16.2 years. Discretionary spending patterns, fashion trends, technology, brand and media preferences are assessed through surveying a geographically diverse subset of high schools across the U.S.

Since the project began in 2001, Piper Sandler has surveyed more than 274,273 teens and collected approximately 65 million data points on teen spending. To see the full list of key findings, visit pipersandler.com/teens.
