Future iterations of the Apple Vision Pro may be smaller and collapsible

Future iterations of the Apple Vision Pro may be smaller and collapsible as evidenced by a newly granted Apple patent for a “Collapsible Head-Mountable Device.”

About the patent

The patent relates generally to head-mountable devices, and, more particularly, to collapsible configurations for head-mountable devices, such as with bistable adjustment assemblies. In the patent Apple says that it can be desirable to provide a head-mountable device with various configurations that can alternately be achieved to enhance both usage and storage of the device.

For example, in use the display elements of a head-mountable device can be desirably positioned with respect to the user’s eyes while engaging the head and/or face of the user. At other times, it can be desirable to store the head-mountable device in a more compact form to reduce space occupancy and/or to engage with other devices, such as a charging station. Apple thinks a collapsible version of the Vision Pro would fulfill such needs.

Summary of the patent

Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent: “A head-mountable device can provide adjustable size and shape for storage, transport, and/or charging. A head-mountable device can provide a bistable adjustment mechanism, such as a bistable hinge, that biases a component of the head-mountable device to either of two configurations. Such adjustability can be provided by a light seal module of the head-mountable device and can facilitate collapse of a head securement element, such as arms for engaging the head of the user.”
