Apple should’ve tried to land the rights to ‘Sesame Street’ for Apple TV+; now, it’s too late

In an interesting article at Tom’s Guide, Philip Michaels says Apple should scoop up the rights to “Sesame Street.” I think he’s right.

In a January Philip Michaels — in an interesting article at Tom’s Guide — said Apple should scoop up the rights to “Sesame Street.” He was right, but now it’s too late.

As reported by Deadline, Netflix has picked up the children’s series, which will make its debut on the streamer later this year with an all-new, reimagined 56th season — plus 90 hours of previous episodes — available to audiences worldwide. The streaming giant is coming on board after HBO Max opted not to renew its Sesame Streetstreaming deal at the end of last yea

This is a missed opportunity for Apple to boost Apple TV+ viewership. Philip said that Apple should bid for “Sesame Street” rights. Here are his reasons:

° Apple TV Plus has built up a strong reputation for delivering quality programming, particularly when it comes to TV shows … And programming doesn’t get much higher in quality than “Sesame Street,” a show that’s been teaching generations of kids their numbers, letters and a whole lot more about getting along in this great big world of ours.

° Apple has worked with Sesame Workshop before, commissioning a show called “Helpsters” where monsters taught kids about teamwork and problem solving. “Helpsters” racked up three seasons worth of episodes, so you’d imagine that both Apple and Sesame Workshop got something out of the deal.

As Philip pointed out, there are some obstacles to overcome (which you can read about in his article). But Apple should have make it a priority to add “Sesame Street” to its award-winning line-up of family/kids’ programs.
