In his latest “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple has no “meaningful”plans for an update of the AirPods Max after the introduction of a model with USB-C earlier this year.
The update disappointed most Max fans. It replaced the Lightning port with USB-C and offered some new color options, but little more. There was no processor update, no adaptive audio, or other features folks were expecting.
“The headphones aren’t a hot enough seller to justify pouring money into development, but they’re also not a big enough flop to kill them outright,” Gurman writs. “ If you’ve ever been to an upscale gym in Los Angeles or New York, you can see these $550 headphones have a market — even with the high price and outdated technology.”
He thinks Apple will keep AirPods Max around in their current form for the “foreseeable future,” so it could be years before we see a truly updated version of the headset.
