Rumor: Apple will release an updated Vision Pro with a M5 chip in 2025

Apple plans to release an updated Vision Pro headset with a M5 chip in 2025, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says in an “X” post. The current Vision Pro is equipped with the M2 chip, which debuted in 2022.

“As I understand it, production of the cheaper Vision Pro has been delayed beyond 2027 for a while now. This means Apple’s only new head-mounted display device in 2025 will be the Vision Pro with an upgraded M5 processor,” he says. “I think what really drove Apple to delay the cheaper Vision Pro is that simply reducing the price wouldn’t help create successful use cases. It’s similar to the HomePod situation—even after launching the cheaper HomePod mini, Apple’s smart speakers failed to become mainstream products.”

This opinion goes against that of another respected analyst. In an October 13, 2024 “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple may release a new Vision Pro next year for about US$2,000, compared to the current model’s starting price of US3,499.

He said that Apple will lower the price by using a less powerful processor and more plastic, less aluminum and glass. Gurman adds that the next version of the spatial computer will also drop the EyeSight feature. EyeSight reveals your eyes on the front of your Apple Vision Pro, and lets those nearby know when you’re using apps or fully immersed in an experience.

Gurman expects the less expensive Vision Pro to sell at least twice as many units as the current model. However, when it comes to an update of the high-end version, Gurman doesn’t expect to see it until 2026 — not 2025, as Kuo predicts.
