Apple patent involves ‘Windows With Photoluminescent Lighting’ for a vehicle

Apple may have canceled its Apple Car project, but the company is still being granted patents for vehicle-related technology. The latest is number US 12109941 B1 for “Windows With Photoluminescent Lighting’

About the patent

The patent involves structures that pass light, and, more particularly, to windows that may be formed from glass or other transparent material. Such windows — which could be used in a building as well as a car — may have photoluminescent material.

The photoluminescent material may be pumped by light sources such as light-emitting diodes. In response, the photoluminescent material may luminesce. Emitted light from the photoluminescent material may be used as a source of illumination. For example, an area of photoluminescent material may be configured to emit light that serves as interior illumination for an interior region of the system.

Summary of the patent

Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent: “A system may have a window. The window may have a waveguide that includes photoluminescent material such as a phosphor layer. The waveguide may have a waveguide core surrounded by cladding layers. The waveguide may be located between an outer structural glass layer and an inner structural glass layer.

“A light source such as an ultraviolet light source provides pump light to one or more edges the waveguide. The pump light is guided within the waveguide and excites the photoluminescent material. This causes the photoluminescent material to luminesce and create visible light illumination. The visible light illumination may be used to light up an interior region of the system.”

  • Interestingly, although Apple has put its car project on the back burner, it continues to innovate in the field of car-related technologies, such as this patent for a photoluminescent window. I think everyone here knows that before you buy a car, you have to check it out on https://www.faxvin.com/license-plate-lookup/utah , this service, because it has all the data about the car, its license plate, and so on. The idea of windows that can glow with photoluminescent materials can add a sleek, futuristic look to cars or even buildings. Imagine the interior of your car being subtly illuminated through the windows instead of traditional lamps – it’s a cool concept that could change the way we think about lighting design. It will be interesting to see if this technology finds its way into future products, even beyond vehicles.
