Apple is said to be still planning the use of microLED in future products such as the Apple Watch Ultra and a rumored follow-on to the Apple Vision Pro, according to a tweet by Junkanlosreve— as noted by AppleInsider.
Past rumors had said that Apple had scrapped plans to use the technology. However, this may not be the case.
“Apple has not given up on Micro LED technology,” says Jukanlosreve in an X post. “They are preparing Micro LED for AR glasses, with mass production expected in 2026.The plan to include Micro LED in the Apple Watch Ultra is also still in place, with a target launch in 2026.”
The AR glasses mentioned could either be an Apple Vision Pro 2 or a less expensive spatial computer. Along with OLEDs, microLEDs are primarily aimed at small, low-energy devices such as smartwatches and smartphones. However, unlike OLED, microLED is based on conventional GaN LED technology, which offers higher total brightness than OLED produces. It also doesn’t suffer from the shorter lifetimes of OLED.
