Parks Associates’ newest Consumer Insights Dashboard, Tech Ecosystem Dashboard, reveals that in the first quarter of this year, HP overtook Apple in laptop sales for the first time since 2020.

The research group says HP’s share of laptop sales rose to 25%. Apple dropped to 22% in quarter one of 2024 from 29% in quarter three of 2023. Sales for Dell increased modestly to 17% but in general are consistent relative to previous years.

Apple’s Mac laptop sales should rebound later this year. Apple’s supply chain began mass production of next-gen 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M4 processors last month, according to DigiTimes

Counterpoint Research says Apple is waiting for the M4 MacBook launch to regain shipment momentum of laptops. AI [artificial intelligence] laptops such as the M4 MacBook will expand the AI PC market in H2 2024, according to Counterpoint Senior Analyst William Li.

In a May edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said “you should expect M4 Pro and M4 Max chips later this year as part of the high-end MacBook Pro. He added that he expects Apple to release three new Macs with the standard M4 chip later this year, including a lower-end 14-inch MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini.
