Analyst: only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will sport 12GB of DRAM

iPhone 17 concept

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that, contrary to some reports, among the 2025 iPhone models, only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature the following specifications:

° 12GB DRAM (while the ultra-thin iPhone, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and SE4 will all have 8GB). Enhanced on-device AI capabilities will likely be a major selling point for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

° An upgraded cooling system combining vapor chamber (VC) technology and graphite sheets. Other 2025 new iPhone models will continue to use graphite sheets alone for thermal management.

“The Pro Max currently accounts for nearly 40% of new model shipments, making the most significant contribution to Apple’s revenue and profit among hardware products,” says Kuo. “The differentiation strategy of providing the best specifications (beyond a larger display size than Pro) for Pro Max is expected to continue.”

Speaking of next year’s iPhones, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple will discontinue the Plus model of its smartphone when the iPhone 17 line-up debuts in 2025.

“The Plus model currently accounts for only about 5–10% of total new iPhone shipments,” he says. “It implies that the other three iPhone models (standard, Pro, and Pro Max) already adequately cover the high-end market segments, making the Plus model redundant.”

Kuo reiterated his prediction that Apple will introduce an “ultra-slim” iPhone next year. He says the new ultra-slim model isn’t positioned to replace the Plus. Instead, Apple is exploring new design trends beyond the existing iPhone lineup.

And  The Information says Apple will release at least one iPhone 17 model in 2025 with mechanical aperture. The mechanical system would allow users to adjust the size of the iPhone 17’s aperture.

Other details about the overall specifications of the iPhone 17 lineup have been shared by the leaker known as “Ice Universe.”

He/she says the screen sizes and pricing will be:

  • iPhone 17: 6.27-inch LTPO display ($799)
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.27-inch LTPO display ($1,099)
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.86-inch LTPO display ($1,199)
  • iPhone 17 “Slim”: 6.65-inch LTPO display ($1,299).
