Apple wants to return some of its land to Waukee, Iowa, to restore wetlands

Apple excels in the 2024 Retailer Report Card from Toxic-Free Future that looks at how North American retailers work to reduce plastic and protect customers from toxic chemicals.

Apple wants to return some of its land to Waukee, Iowa, to restore wetlands.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission meets Tuesday, reports KCCI 8 of Des Moines. The commission will discuss plans for 220 acres north of Hickman Road and west of S Avenue. The wetland area would also have public walkways.

Apple bought 2,000 acres of land in western Waukee in 2017 for two data centers. Construction on the first center began in 2022. Apple is reserving nearly 600 acres for the second center or other facilities, according to KCCI 8.

Apple hopes to begin its complex with a 315,000-square-foot data center building. The tech giant announced plans for the data center in 2017.
