China’s smartphone sales increased 6% year-over-year (YoY) in the second quarter of 2024, but Apple saw a single-digit YoY decline despite increase in Pro series’ share, according to Counterpoint Research.
iPhone sales declined 5.7% annually. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max accounted for about 50% of Apple’s sales in quarter two of 2024, higher than the 47% contributed by the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max in the year-ago quarter. Counterpoint says this reflects Chinese iOS users’ strong preference for the Pro models as these variants offer better processing, photography and display.
China’s quarterly smartphone performance was in part driven by a 6.8% YoY increase in sales during the 618 shopping festival period held in June where customers enjoyed substantial offers. The second quarter 2024 performance “further confirms the recovery theme emerging in the world’s largest smartphone market and brightens the global outlook for 2024 smartphone sales,” notes Counterpoint.
