BenQ’s US$189 iScreenBar is a clever iMac accessory though it’s a bit on the pricey side.
The peripheral is designed to deal with reflections that obscure the all-in-one’s display, to deal with unevenly lit items, or when surrounding light changes throughout the day.
The gang at BenQ say the iScreenBar is the first monitor light bar designed specifically for the iMac. Its custom magnetic mount preserves the iMac’s camera, microphone and rear logo, while asymmetric optics provide glare-free desk lighting without shining directly on the screen or eyes. You should note that since it’s designed specifically for the iMac, it won’t worth with other displays (and I’ve tried!).
The iScreenBar attaches magnetically to the top of the iMac, so it doesn’t take up desk space. Its aluminum body and glass touch interface are a fine aesthetic match with the all-in-one. However, it only comes in one color (silver), so you can’t color match it with non-silvery iMacs.
There’s also a dedicated macOS app designed for the iScreenBar that allows users to save brightness and color temperature settings for various tasks, then switch between them with a single click. What’s more, Video Call Mode keeps stray light away from the built-in camera while providing more natural facial lighting.
When it comes to technical aspects, the folks at BenQ say ASYM-Light optical technology directs light toward the desk instead of the display. The goal is to “illuminate the entire workspace for a more comfortable environment, including the keyboard, drawing tablet, sketches, and physical references, while reducing screen reflections and preventing direct glare to the eyes.”
What’s more, full-spectrum LEDs help nearby physical colors appear natural. However, the light doesn’t calibrate the iMac display.
If you need what is basically a desk lamp designed to sit on top of your all-in-one and illuminate the work area directly in front of you, the iScreenBar could be $189 well spent. Only your work and work environment can determine if this is for you.
