The Central Consumer Protection Agency of India has escalated its probe into Apple’s software warranty terms, reports Reuters (a subscription is required to read the article).
The article says this situation is shaping up as “Apple’s latest headache in a growth market where it is fast expanding iPhone manufacturing and rapidly growing market share, but also fending off accusations of breaching domestic antitrust laws.”
The escalated probe follows complaints that the iOS 18 update caused screen and microphone failures on some iPhones, with affected users forced to pay repair costs the regulator described as exorbitant.
Apple maintains its no-warranty policy for software aligns with industry norms and that iOS 18 showed no systemic issues in India, citing only 75 complaints. The dispute centers on whether consumers should bear repair costs when a company’s own software update damages devices. If Apple is found in violation, it could face fines, refund orders, or mandated changes to warranty practices. The case adds regulatory pressure as Apple expands manufacturing and market share in India.
