Apple will upgrade some iPads and Macs with OLED displays over the next three years, according to DigiTimes (a subscription is required to read the article).
The tech giant kicked off the tablet OLED era in 2024, introducing Tandem OLED in the iPad Pro to overcome bottlenecks in display lifespan and brightness. Now DigiTimes says we can expect these products to get the upgrade: iPad mini (this year); MacBook Pro (later 2026 or early 2027), iPad Air (2027), iMac (2028 or 2029), and the MacBook Air (2028 or 2029).
I’m not sure if the MacBook Pro mentioned by DigiTimes is the rumored “MacBook Ultra” or an update of the MacBook Pro itself. The Ultra is expected to be the first Mac with a touchscreen display. It’s likely to arrive later this year or early next year.
OLED screens turn on and off every single pixel by itself. This removes the big backlight used in older LCD screens. Because of this, OLED gives you pure black colors, infinite contrast, and a very thin shape.
