Apple’s Phil Schiller is stepping down from running the App Store and managing special events, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman (a subscription is required to read the article).
He adds that the exec isn’t leaving the tech giant. Gurman says that Schiller told Apple employees that he would be working on “unspecified initiates.”
In 2020 Apple announced that he was becoming an Apple Fellow, continuing a career that began at Apple in 1987. An Apple Fellow is a person who has been recognized by Apple for his/her extraordinary technical or leadership contributions to personal computing while at the company. Each Apple Fellow acts as a leader and a visionary, guiding the company in their particular area of expertise. Schiller has helped guide Apple’s products as well as its marketing for 30-plus years.
Gurman says Apple will move the responsibility for the App Store over to the Services division. That means it will be overseen by Eddy Cue, Senior Vice President of Services and Health. Interestingly, he was the manager of the App Store until 2015, when it was passed to Schiller.
