AngelWrite is a handy macOS menu-bar app for push-to-talk dictation: hold a hotkey, speak, release, and your text appears right at the cursor in any app.
The latest release adds a live preview allowing you to “think with your eyes as you go.” Once you download the app, you’ll need to grant it access to your microphone in order to record your speech.
To allow AngelWrite to insert text into other apps, it needs accessibility access. Click the “Request Permission” button and macOS will open System Settings. Enable the toggle next to AngelWrite. (You’ll have to enter your Mac’s password to complete the procedure.)
Once installed you’ll see a list of instructions on how to use the app to dictate.
Then you’ll be given some General options.
Then you’ll be presented with a list of Shortcuts.
Then you’ll be given a choice of Modes.
Other settings allow you to create your own word lists and set various permissions.
Once you’re up and running, a floating preview window shows the recognized text word by word, while you’re still speaking, including the active mode and shortcut in the header. You read along the whole time and stay in control. The preview is for reading along only; the inserted text is finalized.
In local mode (Original), AngelWrite runs completely offline. Transcription happens on your Mac, no server connection is needed. The 7-day Pro trial and Pro mode use cloud transcription and AI processing and require an internet connection.
A demo is available for download. Pricing is $99/year for the pro version and $149 for the Advanced version. The previously mentioned Pro version offers: Original mode: cloud-enhanced; AI modes: Translate, Always Friendly, Professional; Cloud transcription included; AI refinement included; Fair use: 250 requests / week; new AI modes & features automatically installed; and email support.
The Advanced version offers: your own API key (OpenAI or Claude), BYOK; a custom mode: your own prompt; unlimited requests, no weekly limit; business use: your own company LLM (optional); and a one-time payment, no ongoing costs
