JumpCloud’s Q3 2026 IT Trends Report, AI Agents Are Entering Critical Workflows. Who’s Governing Them?, is now live.
As the AI industry debates how to govern increasingly capable and autonomous systems, JumpCloud’s latest research reveals that organizations are already facing that challenge internally: AI agents are moving into production, gaining access to critical workflows, and operating with less human oversight.
The report finds that enterprises are entering a new phase of AI adoption, one where the biggest challenge is no longer whether organizations will use AI agents, but whether they can
securely manage the identities, access, and accountability behind them. Here are some key findings from the report:
- Autonomy is accelerating faster than oversight: The percentage of organizations requiring human review before high-risk AI actions has dropped from 40% to 25% in just six months, while full autonomy without human review has more than doubled from 11% to 26%.
- AI agents are becoming a new identity category: Non-human identities now outnumber human users in 83% of organizations, but only 21% have implemented controls to manage them.
- AI governance remains immature: Organizations have adopted fewer than a third of standard AI governance and security practices, creating gaps as agents gain more access and responsibility.
- Confidence in AI readiness is declining: Only 23% of IT leaders now describe their organizations as mature in AI deployment, down from 40% six months ago, even as adoption continues to expand.
- The organizations scaling fastest are those with stronger foundations: Companies operating in unified IT environments are nearly five times more likely to deploy AI agents into business-critical workflows (55% versus 11%).
