How to Take Screenshots in macOS Tahoe

1. Keyboard Shortcuts

Use these quick key combinations to capture exactly what you need: 

  • Entire Screen: Press ⌘Command + Shift + 3.
  • Selected Portion: Press ⌘Command + Shift + 4, then click and drag the crosshair over the area you want to capture.
  • Specific Window or Menu: Press ⌘Command + Shift + 4, then press the Space bar. Your pointer turns into a camera icon—just click the desired window to snap it.
  • Copy Directly to Clipboard: Add the Control key to any shortcut (e.g., ⌘Command + Control + Shift + 3) to bypass saving a file and copy the image straight to your clipboard for immediate pasting. 

2. The Screenshot App & Menu

Press ⌘Command + Shift + 5 to bring up the system’s dedicated screen capture toolbar. This menu lets you: [

  • Choose between capturing the entire screen, a selected window, or a specific portion.
  • Record your screen or set a capture timer.
  • Access the Options menu to change your default save location, toggle the floating thumbnail, or adjust high-dynamic-range (HDR/SDR) capture formats if supported by your display
