How to deal with ‘stuttering’ issues on Apple Studio Display speakers

Stuttering or choppy audio on an Apple Studio Display speakers can be a problem.

I repeatedly have issues with my Apple Studio Display speakers “stuttering” when streaming music in Apple Music. There’s no issue when attach external speakers.

To stop stuttering or choppy audio on your Apple Studio Display speakers, first quickly power cycle the display: unplug its power cord, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. This resets the display’s internal processor and resolves the memory leaks and audio glitches that frequently cause stuttering.

If power cycling doesn’t resolve the stuttering, run through these primary troubleshooting steps in order:

  • Switch Audio Devices: Go to System Settings > Sound > Output, select your Mac’s internal speakers, and then switch back to the Studio Display. This refreshes the handshake between the Mac and the display’s audio driver.
  • Update macOS & Display Firmware: Ensure your Mac is running the latest version of macOS. Apple occasionally rolls out firmware updates for the Studio Display specifically designed to fix audio and display connectivity issues.
  • Remove USB/Thunderbolt Hubs: If your Studio Display is connected through a third-party dock, unplug it. Connect the display directly to your Mac, as hubs and docks can sometimes cause signal dropouts and bandwidth bottlenecks.
  • Check for Physical Interference: Move wireless routers, external drives, or other unshielded cables away from your Mac and the Studio Display’s Thunderbolt cable, as electrical or radio interference can cause audio distortion
