CNET’s Scott Stein has written a must-read article called “Apple: The Next 50 Years.” Among all his interesting predictions he thinks Apple might eventually resurrect its abandoned Apple Car idea.
Apple canned its long-in-the-works Apple Car project in February 2024. The planned autonomous, premium EV was considered a failure after significant investment, with staff reallocated to other divisions.
The Apple Car is probably abandoned forever. However, Apple has revived “dead” products in the past, including the full-size HomePod and its own line of displays.
Here’s what Stein writes: Apple could make autonomous (or semi-autonomous) devices running the same spatial computing logic as headsets in order to understand what you need, since they’re part of the same Apple account system. Maybe your glasses would even help train them.
Apple’s options might not be the cheapest, but they could be preferred for their step-up design or security features. Also, maybe Apple customers over many decades just prefer it, like BMW drivers.
Could Apple once again explore building its own car, once automobiles truly feel more like robots? Apple making a phone once seemed absurd, too. Reports of a sort-of-robotic HomePod in the works show that Apple may be kicking the tires on robotics soon.
