New research from cybersecurity training platform TryHackMe reveals the U.S. states offering the highest average wages across major technology roles, alongside how much tech graduates are earning four years after finishing university.
To compile the rankings, researchers analyzed Bureau of Labor Statistics data to calculate average tech wages in each state, comparing them to the national benchmark of $106,671.
Graduate outcomes were sourced from College Scorecard data, focusing on median earnings four years after graduation, comparing tech graduates to all degree holders within each state and against the national tech graduate average of $60,345.
Washington ranks first for overall tech wages, with average salaries of $140,466 – 32% above the national benchmark. The highest-paid role in the state, Computer and Information Research Scientists, can earn up to $204,290 annually.
Four years after graduation, tech alumni earn a median of $64,148 – 56% higher than the state’s typical graduate salary and 6% above the national tech graduate average of $60,345.
California places second, offering average tech wages of $136,935 – 28% above the U.S. average. Software Developers earn up to $185,750.
Tech graduates earn $62,432 four years after graduation, which is 90% above the state median graduate salary and 3% above the national tech graduate average.
Massachusetts ranks third for tech wages at $129,378, 21% above the national average. Computer and Information Research Scientists earn up to $175,700.
The state stands out for graduate outcomes, with tech alumni earning $82,922 four years after graduation – 76% above the state median graduate salary and 37% higher than the national tech graduate average, the strongest in the country.
Next is New York, with average tech wages of $125,685, 18% above the national average. The highest-paid tech role reaches $201,790. Tech graduates earn $65,769 four years after graduation, 83% above the state median graduate salary and 9% above the national tech graduate benchmark.
Maryland places fifth, with average tech wages of $125,229 – 17% above the national average. Software Developers earn up to $150,800. Tech graduates earn $66,943 four years after graduation, 66% higher than the state median and 11% above the national tech graduate average.
Virginia ranks sixth with average tech wages of $124,536, 17% above the national average. Computer and Information Research Scientists earn up to $159,480. Tech graduates earn $59,903 four years after graduation, 60% above the state median graduate salary, though 1% below the national tech graduate average.
In seventh place is Oregon, where tech wages average $124,359, also 17% above the national average. Computer and Information Research Scientists earn up to $211,010 – the highest individual role salary among the top ten states.
Tech graduates earn $62,589 four years after graduation, 92% above the state median graduate salary and 4% above the national tech graduate average.
New Jersey ranks eighth with average tech wages of $123,598, 16% above the national average. Computer Network Architects earn up to $148,960. Tech graduates earn $62,102 four years after graduation, 86% above the state median graduate salary and 3% above the national tech graduate benchmark.
Connecticut ranks ninth with average tech wages of $115,011, 8% above the national average. Database Architects earn up to $147,910. Tech graduates earn $68,983 four years after graduation, 60% above the state median graduate salary and 14% above the national tech graduate average.
Hawaii rounds out the top ten for tech wages at $111,850, 5% above the national average. Database Architects earn up to $150,190. However, tech graduates earn $49,478 four years after graduation, 59% above the state median graduate salary but 18% below the national tech graduate average.
