Apple plans to 3D-print aluminum device enclosures in the future (including, perhaps, an iPhone)

introduced a new 3D printing manufacturing process for the Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Apple is hoping to 3D-print aluminum device enclosures in the future, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says in his latest “Power On” newsletter.

The tech giant introduced a new 3D printing manufacturing process for the Apple Watch Ultra 3’s (pictured) titanium shell. Apple also also uses 3D printing for the titanium version of the Apple Watch Series 11, as well as the USB-C port on iPhone Air. This allows the company to save on raw materials, help keep costs in line, and used 100% recycled titanium powder.

Gurman says Apple wants to expand that process to aluminum – allowing most Apple Watch shells to be 3D printed. And if the kinks in the process are worked out, Apple may even be able to 3D-print some future iPhones.
