Apple patent involves ‘Devices and Methods for Generating Virtual Objects’

This graphic illustrates exemplary ways for generating a virtual object based on a real-world object.

Apple wants to make it easier for folks to create virtual objects as evidenced by a newly granted patent for “Devices and Methods for Generating Virtual Objects.”

About the patent

The patent elates generally to computer systems that generate and/or present virtual objects and methods and graphical user interfaces for generating and/or presenting virtual objects.

In the patent Apple notes that computer-generated environments are environments where at least some objects displayed for a user’s viewing are generated using a computer. A user may interact with virtual objects displayed in a computer-generated environment using input devices (e.g., a mouse, a touch sensor, etc.).

However, Apple says that constructing three-dimensional virtual objects in such environments can be complex and time consuming. The newly granted patent involves methods for changing this.

Summary of the patent

Here’s Apple’s abstract of the patent: “Some examples described in this disclosure are directed to devices, methods, and graphical user interfaces for generating, updating, and/or presenting virtual objects in a computer-generated environment.

“In some examples, an electronic device presents a user interface for generating a virtual object corresponding to the real-world object detected by the electronic device, where the user interface includes selectable options corresponding to respective portions of the real-world object. In some examples, in response to receiving a selection of a first portion of the real-world object, the electronic device updates the user interface and corresponding selectable options according to the first portion of the real-world object.”
