Apple has been granted a patent for an “User Interface for Displaying and Managing Widgets.”
It relates generally to computer user interfaces, and more specifically to techniques for displaying and managing widgets. Widgets are graphical elements or user interface components used to display information or enable user interaction with an application.
However, Apple says that some techniques for displaying and managing widgets are “generally cumbersome and inefficient.” For example, some existing techniques use a complex and time-consuming user interface, which may include multiple key presses or keystrokes. Existing techniques require more time than necessary, wasting user time and device energy. This latter consideration is particularly important in battery-operated devices.
The patent involves a technique that provides electronic devices with faster, more efficient methods and interfaces for displaying and managing widgets. Apple says such methods and interfaces reduce the cognitive burden on a user and produce a more efficient human-machine interface. For battery-operated computing devices, such methods and interfaces conserve power and increase the time between battery charges.
Additionally, Apple says such methods and interfaces allow for quick access to relevant information and, as a result, reduce the number of unnecessary/redundant inputs needed to access the relevant information.
