How to attach a game controller in iPadOS 26

I really like most of the games in Apple Arcade, Apple’s gaming streaming service that allows you to play games on — and across — Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPod touches, and Apple TVs. And I really like that you can pair a PlayStation DUALSHOCK 4 or Xbox Wireless Controller for gameplay.

One of my favorite features of iPadOS is the ability to use a PlayStation DUALSHOCK 4 (my favorite and the one pictured) or Xbox Wireless Controller with an iPad. For me, it’s a must-have feature for playing games in Apple Arcade.

To pair or unpair one of the controllers with an iPadOS (or iOS) device:

Step one: Begin with your controller turned off. Then to put your controller in pairing mode:

With an Xbox Wireless Controller, press the Xbox button to turn on the controller. Then press and hold the Connect button for a few seconds.

With a DUALSHOCK4 Wireless Controller, press and hold the PS and Share buttons at the same time until the light bar begins to flash.

Step two: On your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, tap Settings.

Step three: Select Bluetooth and check that it’s turned on.

Step four: To pair, find the name of your controller under Other Devices. Tap the name to connect.

To unpair, tap the Information icon next to the name of the device, then tap Forget This Device.
