As memory prices rise, cost pressures are intensifying across the PC market, prompting major vendors, including Dell, to adjust pricing. Will Apple hike prices on the Mac?
According to Business Insider, citing sources, Dell plans to raise prices across its commercial product lines starting December 17. Sources say the price increase would range from 10% to 30%, depending on the contract.
Dell is one of the leading providers of computer hardware to US companies, and prices aren’t just rising at itl. An industry-wide shortage of memory and storage chips is driving up costs across the PC industry, affecting competitors like Lenovo and HP as well, notes Business Insider.
The article notes that “soaring demand for AI infrastructure has tech companies snapping up enormous quantities of memory and storage chips, increasing competition for consumer devices.” Rising DRAM memory prices are putting pressure on Apple, making a Mac price hike possible. However, instead of raising the base price, they might increase base RAM and make higher-tier options more expensive, boosting average revenue per device.
However, an even better idea according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) is that Apple could (and should) suck up the price increase, at least in the short term with the hopes that prices will eventually drop. After all, Apple’s extremely large profit markets would allow it to absorb costs, at least for a while.
And if Mac prices stayed relatively stable while other companies raised their prices, Apple’s desktop and laptop sales would benefit.
